Sadie's is just fine - don't listen to the bitter 'old school' hype

From the customer side, things have improved at Sadie's. I've been going there since the late '90s and, while some of the punk rock attitude has dried up, the place is slightly tidier, the juke box has finally moved on (the same CDs were on it for 6 years), and the pool tables have new felt. Yeah, they raised the price a quarter and they took out the book shelves, but they kept the couches but most of the stale bar flies that inhabited the place are gone. The drink prices may have been raised by 50 cents--maybe--but they were so cheap to begin with that the drinks are still some of the most affordable around.

I don't know what it was like to work there, only that I know what is like to drink there--still.

See ya there.

Sadie's Flying Ele-Fake

So I was trolling around the interwebs, and what to my wandering eye should appear?

Sadie's new owners , posting "false positive" reviews... tsk tsk tsk

Can you imagine someone so overjoyed, or erroneusly lost in a San Francisco social void, that they would go home & take the time to join a website to actually report in their one & only ever review of anything... "The New Sadies Rocks!"

...as if they even understood what the "OLD" Sadie's was...

Then these newbie forum trollers also take a moment to get excited about how much better life has gotten in their lonely & expensive dive bar investment , especially now that that there is no "clutter" or "chalk" ...and that you should "be there for the change" and a new "cute bartender" who is not "aloof"

Whoo Woo ! Pump It Up ...

but if that's the best PR you can muster fellas...

Sad...

I guess some folks still can't take the hint, it's the people that make the party...

not the people running it...

just a note for any Flying Phonebooth owners who are lonely & bitter and hit our boycott website twice a day from your job at MacWorld...

it's not hard for people to boycott a place that no one gives a flying f*ck about anymore besides the owner...

nice job
BOYCOTT SADIES FLYING ELEPHANT

PLEASE BOYCOTT
THE "NEW IMPROVED" SADIES FLYING ELEPHANT

UNDER NEW HOSTILE MANAGEMENT & UNFAIR TO WORKERS

http://boycottsadies.blogspot.com

Hi

I worked for the past four years as a bartender at a San Francisco bar known as Sadies Flying Elephant. My relationship with the place stretches back even longer, dating to when I built the first website shortly after it opened back in 1998.

The original owners, Sean & Jules, were a couple who had a lot of community goodwill behind them when they opened initially on a shoestring with just a beer/wine license. Many people donated furniture, art and their skills and labor to get the joint opened, and keep it afloat. For the first year or so people made a real effort to go down there, and support the place while it awaited a liquor license.

Over the years Sadie's became a community center of sorts, and holds a special place in the memories of so many folks who've passed through over the years. The atmosphere, with it's quirky chalk art covered walls, thrift store fixtures, bookshelves & board games was created as much by the customers as the staff and owners. The place was known for it's dollar beers at happy hour, and goofball events like Bingo & Easter Egg Hunts, Indie Film Screenings, Chalk Art contests and occasional political fundraisers for local school board candidates and even Matt Gonzalez long before he was a supervisor, and well known by the political establishment.

The bar was a simple gathering place open to all that featured a trophy winning Pool Team, and has hosted SF's longest running queer open mic event Kvetsh every month. As workers and customers we shared a unique camaraderie that seemed more like an extended family than a mere place of business.

Sadly by early 2006, Sean & Jules were busy raising a family, and needed to move on and sold the place to new investors.

Within days of taking over, the new management aloofly let it be known that they were not interested in retaining many aspects of the establishment as it were. They immediately raised prices 35% to 150% across the board. Getting a return on their investment was certainly understandable, but as they began alienating the workers and regular customers, questions arose.

It was if they bought a place they had never been too or wanted to go, and exhibited a condescending attitude in nearly all interactions with them. Apparently they have no interest in Sadie's long earned reputation as an offbeat locale, and could care less for it's unique atmosphere , loyal staff, and regular customers that came along with it. They even scoffed at stocking even the basic beers & booze that regular customers request. It's beyond my understanding why someone would buy a place only to ruin their most obvious source of cashflow...

I've never seen anyone squander so much goodwill in so little time...

Then they began firing the staff for dubious & ridiculous reasons... with no notice.

Why?

The new owners seem embittered, overly dictatorial, and have little interest in listening to simple suggestions made by their own customers and staff. Their actions do not deserve our support as a community...

There are over 2400 alcoholic beverage license holders in San Francisco, please find one treating customers & employees fairly... and patronize them.

PLEASE BOYCOTT

THE "NEW IMPROVED" SADIES FLYING ELEPHANT

Puttin' The Root Down 10/17 ! Chinggis Khaan is coming !

There is a new locally micro brewed beer named after the famed blacksmith turned warlord called Chinggis Khaan. We'll be testing it out in all it's handcrafted glory @ Sadie's starting on Oct 17th

Despite being named after one of the world's fiercest horseman and famed warriors, likely the most gnarly part of this new brew is that it contains Mongolia's "Golden Root" a.ka. Rhodiola rosea...

The ancient homeopathic medicinal properties of this root have been rumored to include exhaustion fighting properties, and like Ginseng, it's a well known folk lore "adaptogen". Golden Root was believed to enhance uh, "fertility" prospects in it's male users and young Siberian married couples were often presented with a bouquet of it before their honeymoon.

Golden Root was traded throughout the ancient world, with the Greeks, Vikings and ancient Chinese scribes all giving it prime mention back in the day. In the 1700's it was found good for fighting vaginal discharge, and cold war era Soviets even gave it secretly to their soldiers and Olympic contenders to encourage superior performance.

In recent years it has become a much studied herbal supplement, used to fight depression & fatigue, boost the nervous system, and ease stress. Apparently research has been conducted showing it to have properties that may also aid in weight loss, memory enhancement, endorphin release and immune system stimulation. Golden Root may increase the bodies ability to fight and recover from toxins and even relax back & neck aches.

Hey ... we make no claims that Chinggis Khaan Beer can do all this stuff... but wouldn't it be nice to be in on the taste test...and get a healthy little bonus...

Named after the esteemed ancient ruler of Mongolia this brand new addition to the brewing scene is conquering folks one sip at a time. Now, eight hundred years after Chengis Khaan's reign tha stands unique through time, there is a beer powerful enough to link to the cultural traditions and perhaps earn a similar lasting reverence.

Come down to Sadie's this Sunday and meet Enki, the brewer who has created this hand made Pilsner style brew and sip on some Golden Root via refreshing freshly bottled Chinggis Khaan. Believe me you'll love it, at least more than you would 'Airag' (fermented Mongolian mares milk). It's made using ale yeast instead of lager yeast and fermented and bottled with loving care by the experts in obscure brewing techniques at Bison in Berkely.

It's all good down here in the 'hood.

9 ish - Beer flowing all nite from 4 pm on as part of the afternoon Bar BQ

Lil Mike's nefarious Sunday Soul Survivor Special Event starts at 9 ish

listen to cust from Golden Age of Soul ( Curtis Mayfield, Spinners, Ike & Tina, Lee Dorsey, James Brown ) and sip on Golden Root...

-------------- the vitals --------
Sadie's Flying Elephant - 491 Potrero @ Mariposa, 415 551 7988

stuff coming soon:
